Combining Funnels

A new twist on an old tale.. . Abstract We enhance the well established software combining synchronization technique for shared memory multiprocessors to create combining funnels. Previous software combining methods used a statically assigned tree whose depth was logarithmic in the total number of processors in the system. The new method allows to dynamically build combining trees with depth lo...

Improved Collaborative Filtering

We consider the interactive model of collaborative filtering, where each member of a given set of users has a grade for each object in a given set of objects. The users do not know the grades at start, but a user can probe any object, thereby learning her grade for that object directly. We describe reconstruction algorithms which generate good estimates of all user grades (“preference vectors”)...

Funnels in Energy Landscapes

Local minima and the saddle points separating them in the energy landscape are known to dominate the dynamics of biopolymer folding. Here we introduce a notion of a “folding funnel” that is concisely defined in terms of energy minima and saddle points, while at the same time conforming to a notion of a “folding funnel” as it is discussed in the protein folding literature. PACS. 87.10.+e General...

Fluctuating Fuzzy Funnels

It is well known that a D-string ending on a D3, D5 or D7 brane is described in terms of a non-commutative fuzzy funnel geometry. In this article, we give a numerical study of the fluctuations about this leading geometry. This allows us to investigate issues related to the stability and moduli space of these solutions. We comment on the comparison to the linearized fluctuations in supergravity.

Improved Neighborhood-based Collaborative Filtering

Recommender systems based on collaborative filtering predict user preferences for products or services by learning past user-item relationships. A predominant approach to collaborative filtering is neighborhood based (“k-nearest neighbors"), where a user-item preference rating is interpolated from ratings of similar items and/or users. In this work, we enhance the neighborhood-based approach le...
